But I do know how to Google stuff!

(This one’s for you, Melissa.)

If, like Melissa, you are interested in adding category buttons (or any buttons for that matter) to your blog, the following is a little how-to. And if you know much at all about html, CSS, and other things that are even further above my head, you’ll just have to pardon my oversimplification. This is how it makes sense to me:

Step one: Find a picture you want to use as the background for your button. If you do not want to use a picture, open your paint program and save a small, button sized “canvas” in whatever color you choose.

Step two: Upload your background image to Photobucket.com.

(No, Photobucket is not your only option. And yes, I think Photobucket should pay me for this post.)

ha. ha.

Step three: Use Photobucket’s many gadgets to add any bells, whistles and/or text that you’d like. Save your button as a copy of the original. This is important – do not replace the original file unless you are creating one unique button!

Step four: After your Photobucket image has been saved, click “share,” then “get link code,” then “direct link for layout pages”. Copy the text in that box and take it with you to Blogger (this information may, or may not, be helpful – depending on your hosting company).

Step five: “Add a gadget” to your blog’s layout by selecting the “HTML” gadget option. The following is the html code for one of my category buttons:

In the first line seen above, the web address contained between quotation marks is the destination of the button. In other words, if someone clicks on this button, they will go to the page containing my marriage posts.

In the second line you will find the button’s label.

The third and fourth lines (the text between the quotations) contain the online location of the button’s image. This is the text you copied from “direct link for layout pages”.

When the above HTML code is translated, the result is: Marriage

Pretty cool, huh?

Step six: Repeat from step three for multiple buttons.
